Mosaic Coptic Crosses

Although not particularly religious, I enjoy making Coptic crosses. The repetitive placing of tiles is meditative and the challenges that arise make it a totally absorbing process. I began making mosaic crosses to place in the architectural niches at Villa Rustica. When visitors said how much they loved them, I began creating portable versions affixed to antique slate tiles.

Making a mosaic cross is a little like assembling a jigsaw puzzle. After deciding on the design and colour combination, a mass of gold tiles is placed face-up on a tray. These tiles are hand-cut and slightly irregular in shape. Just as when solving a jigsaw, the trick is to find the right tile to fit the design. Sometimes a piece needs cutting but I try keeping this to a minimum.

One aspect that’s different from jigsaws is the design template acts as a guide rather than an outline to be strictly adhered to. I often make changes in the making process - adding intricate details and embellishments - so every cross is unique. The early Ethiopean craftsmen also used artistic liberty in their designs and I like to think I’m following in their footsteps.

The wonderful thing about Coptic Crosses is that people relate differently to them. Some people love the crosses because they shimmer in the light and are incredibly beautiful. Others see the cross as part of their cultural or religious heritage. My love for Coptic crosses stems from an interest in the power of icons. An icon is a figure or shape that’s been venerated for centuries and is a potent symbol acting as a window into another time and place. I view the Coptic cross as a symbol of protection and strength transcending the boundaries of religion, race and time.
