Painterly Mosaics Workshop with Mireille Swinnen
In November, nine lucky mosaicists had the opportunity to join Mireille Swinnen for a three-day Painterly Mosaic Workshop. Mireille, a renowned artist from Belgium, teaches a distinct mosaic style inspired by the contemporary mosaic school in Spilimbergo, Italy. This technique uses 'roti'—the off-cuts and edges of Venetian smalti (glass)—to mimic the look of brushstrokes in impasto painting.
The workshop took place at Villa Rustica in Bella, a dedicated mosaic studio. Each day was filled with hands-on learning, PowerPoint presentations, and one-on-one guidance as Mireille shared these new techniques while encouraging us to experiment with texture and colour.
Lunchtimes offered a delightful reprieve, as we wandered up to the Pavilion to enjoy delicious meals overlooking the pool. These moments were not just about refueling; they were opportunities to build friendships, share stories, and exchange ideas. Reflecting on her experience, Robyn wrote, "Being at Villa Rustica was a special time; I remember it as if it was a dream."
This workshop was part of a national workshop tour organised by the Mosaic Association of Australia and New Zealand (MAANZ) leading up to their conference in Geelong. We’re so grateful for the invitation to participate in this remarkable event and wish to thank Mireille for her generous teachings.
