The Beauty of Symbols in our recent mosaic workshop

This winter, we hosted an inspiring six-week mosaic workshop titled "Icons & Symbols," where participants were encouraged to create designs that held personal significance. It was a journey of creativity, connection, and expression.

Exploring Meaningful Designs

Although we were exploring symbolic and iconic forms, everyone approached the forms in their own way. Here are some of the stunning designs created during the workshop:

  • Sue’s miniature Tree of Life: A powerful symbol representing growth, strength, and connection to nature. Sue is a ceramic artist who custom-made her frame.

  • Pauline’s Radiating Sun: A vibrant representation of energy and positivity, reminding us of warmth and light.

  • Dorothy’s Celtic Cross: A traditional design reflecting the richness of family roots, and symbolising faith and the interconnectedness of life.

  • Denise’s Islamic Mosque: A depiction of the symmetry and beauty of Islamic architecture incorporating many different materials and textures.

  • Hanna’s Lego: A playful nod to creativity and childhood, emphasising the joy of building and imagination.

  • Caleena’s Hamsa Hand: A symbol of protection and good fortune, with touches of gold adding a sense of spirituality to the mosaic.

  • Sonya’s Om Symbol: To hang above the entrance to her home, Sonya’s golden Om symbol represents peace and unity.

  • Vicki’s Kowhai National Flower of New Zealand: A beautiful tribute to the national flower of New Zealand, Vicki’s elegant mosaic showcases the unique flora of the region and national pride.

  • Mel’s Sun and Moon: An intricate textured mosaic symbolising balance, duality, and the cyclical nature of life.

  • Stacie’s Coptic Cross: A symbol of hope, renewal, and the beauty of individuality within spiritual expression.

Hard Work and Dedication

Over the course of six weeks, students dove deep into their projects. Each piece of glass is individually cut and shaped. We also fired the kiln to create glass fusing and we experimented with pulling glass rods for special effects. The atmosphere was filled with creativity and camaraderie as everyone supported one another through the artistic process.
