Our History

The creative genius behind Villa Rustica’s architectural features is renowned Australian painter, Ken Johnson. Working on the property from 2000 to 2012, Ken introduced influences from his global travels. Rajasthani sandalwood columns mix seamlessly with Roman arches and a Moroccan bathhouse creating spaces that are relaxed with an inherent connection to the outdoors.

The main villa features the warm, faded patina of golden stucco walls and each room looks onto the central swimming pool and Moroccan courtyard.

Well before their first visit in 2014, Jane and Greg were entranced by the property. “We came across an article on the house in a local newspaper when Ken was selling up,” says Jane, “and I fell in love with the beautifully mottled walls and the character of the property!”

Another couple purchased the property with plans to stage weddings and hold corporate retreats. When their circumstances changed, the property was returned to the market and, this time, the timing was right for Jane and Greg.

“We were looking for a house with two art studios as Greg is a ceramicist and I make mosaics,” reminisces Jane. “On our first inspection, we could imagine holding artist retreats and workshops in this beautiful setting. As well as the workshops that we teach, we also hold one or two weekend workshops each year with visiting teachers. Villa Rustica is also open to the public in August as part of the local Mud Trail.”

Today, eight amazing years on, Jane and Greg revel in their creative studio spaces. Jane works in her purpose-built mosaic studio and Greg works from the recently refurbished barn. They display their works in an on-site gallery that is open to the public by appointment. The revitalized Villa Rustica is very much their “home” and they are proud to continue the villa’s long association with the arts.

“I like to be transported when I go to someone’s house and that’s the effect I wanted here.”
